The Language of Excellence traces its roots back over three decades, with origins dating back to the early days of management theory exploration. It was laid by Tom Collins, who was deeply influenced by the groundbreaking work of management scholars like Peter Drucker, Deming, and Jim Collins.
M. Thomas (Tom) Collins was an esteemed author and entrepreneur whose legacy continues to inspire many. He passed away on August 29th, 2023, leaving behind a rich tapestry of works that reflect his vivid imagination and deep understanding of the human experience.
In the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Tom immersed himself in the complex texts of management theory. However, recognizing the challenges of comprehending and implementing these theories, especially for the average professional, Tom embarked on a mission to distill these principles into a more accessible format.
Motivated to align teams and foster a deeper understanding of business methodologies, Tom sought to bridge the gap between theory and practice. He envisioned a framework that not only conveyed complex concepts but also empowered individuals to apply them effectively in their professional endeavors.
The journey began with the creation of InSearch, inspired by the seminal work "In Search of Excellence" by Thomas Peters. However, it soon evolved into something more comprehensive and actionable – the Language of Excellence.
It wasn't merely a simplified version of complex management theories; it represented a systematic approach to communicating and implementing these theories within organizations. Even in an era devoid of modern presentation tools like PowerPoint, Tom ingeniously utilized symbols and visuals to make the concepts memorable and tangible.
Now, Stephen Collins, carrying forward his father's mantle, joins forces with Gray Skinner, MasterBorn's CEO and long-time mentee, to honor Tom's memory by preserving and advancing the principles and methodologies he championed, ensuring that his legacy remains an enduring beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
With a main goal to distill the wealth of knowledge and principles found in numerous management books into an accessible and user-friendly format for everyone, they believe that management concepts shouldn't be confined to the shelves of executives or HR departments but should be readily available to every employee within a company.
